Ios vs Santorini: Which Greek Island Is Better?
If you’re planning a trip to Greece, chances are you’re researching how Ios and Santorini compare—two Cycladic gems that couldn’t feel more different.
Santorini is famous for its dramatic cliffs, cave hotels, and dreamy sunsets, and Ios is often misrepresented as only a young-party island.
The reality? Ios has better beaches, cozy tavernas, and luxury resorts far from the nightlife, and Santorini has bad beaches and packed streets.
After visiting both— including on my honeymoon—here’s how they really compare and which one might be right for you.
Quick Comparison: Ios vs Santorini at a Glance
| Category | Ios | Santorini |

| Best For | Beach lovers, budget travelers, couples seeking quiet luxury | Honeymooners, photographers, luxury travelers |
| Vibe | Laid-back, local, relaxed | Romantic, polished, bustling |
| Beaches | Soft sand & turquoise water | Volcanic rocky sand that gets very hot, cliffs |
| Cost | Affordable | Expensive |
| Getting Around | Easy by ATV or bus | ATV, car rental, or bus; much busier roads |
| Nightlife | Beach clubs + lively bars + sunset lounges | Sunset bars + lively clubs |
| Crowds | Manageable in summer, quiet in shoulder season | Packed in the summer months, busy in shoulder season |
How Do the Beaches Compare?
Santorini has a handful of beautiful beaches with volcanic landscapes—but they are not ideal for lounging.
The sand is rocky and super hot (because it’s dark), and the beaches are small and limited, so they are packed with people. And some beaches should be avoided altogether (rocks often fall onto Red Beach from the cliffs above).
Ios is the opposite, with pristine beaches, soft sand, and crystal clear water. The long stretches of sand at Mylopotas, Manganari, and Agia Theodoti are perfect for all-day swimming, lounging, or walking along the shore.
The main beaches can be lively with beach bars, but most of them feel remote and empty.

Getting Around Each Island
Ios is small and easy to explore. The local bus connects Chora, Mylopotas, and Manganari in summer, and renting an ATV or buggy is a fun way to reach quieter parts of the island.
You can catch a taxi near the port and in Chora, and call one if you are elsewhere, but most people get around on ATVs, enjoying open roads and sea views.
Santorini is even smaller, but it’s hillier and much busier—especially near Fira, Oia, and the port.
Buses link major towns but can be crowded in peak season; taxis are scarce and pricey, so I recommend pre-booking transfers when possible.
A car is most practical if you’re exploring the whole island. We rented a car for two days of our trip to explore the whole island.

Hotels and Resorts
Santorini’s cave hotels—carved into cliffs in Fira, Oia, and Imerovigli—are among the world’s most recognizable stays. They typically have private plunge pools and terraces covered in bougainvillea (but $$$).
Ios has milder cliffs and more beachfront stays. We stayed at Levantes Boutique Hotel, just up the hill from Mylopotas Beach. It was peaceful and had amazing views of the sea.
For an even more luxurious stay, I would recommend Hide Out Suites, and for a truly unforgettable and secluded stay, I recommend Calilo in Manganari.
The best thing about Ios is that most of their nice hotels are often half the price of what they would be in Santorini.
Food & Dining
Santorini has some incredible restaurants—rooftop fine-dining, famous fava, and multi-course tasting menus with sunset views.
Ios keeps it simple and soulful. You’ll find family-run tavernas serving grilled octopus, roasted veggies, and homemade tzatziki with a carafe of local wine.
If you’re a foodie, Santorini offers more options, but Ios still has great food with a little more authentic feel.

Things to Do
There is so much to do on both islands. The difference is that you can escape the crowds on Ios; it’s harder to escape crowds in Santorini.
On Santorini: hike the caldera trail, catamaran around the island, go wine tasting, shopping, or explore the ruins in Akrotiri.

On Ios: spend your days beach-hopping, hiking to hilltop chapels, snorkeling, exploring local art, or doing a cheese tasting.

Crowds & Atmosphere: Ios vs Santorini
Santorini sees millions of tourists every year. In July and August, Oia’s walking paths can be shoulder-to-shoulder at sunset – I actually felt claustrophobic for a few minutes.
We were grateful we had a cliffside hotel in Oia because we immediately left the streets and went back to our hotel (even though the sunset view wasn’t as good).
Ios, on the other hand, is much quieter (and hint hint… the sunsets are the same).
The downtown, Chora, is bustling late at night in the summer, but the rest of the island stays peaceful. Even in high season, you can find empty stretches of beach or coastline if you head south or east.

Which Island Is Better for Couples or Honeymooners?
It depends on your style!
Choose Santorini if you want:
- Cliffside cave suites and shopping.
- Luxury spas, wine tastings, and candlelit dinners.
- Buzz of a city while feeling like you’re “in a postcard”.
Choose Ios if you want:
- Soft sand beaches and turquoise water.
- Privacy, open streets, and slow evenings by the sea.
- Boutique resorts and local tavernas
Many couples combine the two: Santorini first for the drama, then Ios to unwind. The ferry takes just 30 minutes—an effortless honeymoon duo.
In fact, this is what we did. We spent 3 nights in Ios and 4 nights in Santorini (it was kind of perfect if you want to steal my itinerary 🙂

💰 Budget Comparison: Ios vs Santorini
| Category | Ios | Santorini |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels | 30–50 % cheaper for similar comfort | $$$ Luxury premiums |
| Dining | 20–30 % less, generous portions | High-end pricing for the view |
| Activities | Comparable | Comparable |
For travelers who value beaches and breathing room, Ios offers a better balance between cost and quality.
When to Visit
When you visit depends on your goals, but Santorini has a longer busy season and can be visited year-round.
Ios is highly seasonal, and most tourist-oriented hotels, restaurants, and bars are closed from around October to March/April.
Ios:
We visited in early September—it was still hot, the water was warm, and the crowds were scarce. Although at around midnight, the bars in Chora were packed!
Daytime felt so peaceful, though; we rode ATVs for hours and passed only a couple of other travelers.
If you want to skip the party vibe, June or September is perfect: calm atmosphere, full services, and gorgeous weather.
If you like the nightlife, the best time to go is July or August. Even then, you can avoid the scene by staying on the southern beaches, but if you want that scene, it will be thriving.
Ios is a seasonal island—by late September, many hotels and tavernas close, and from October to April it’s virtually tourist-free.
Santorini:
Has a longer season; visitors arrive as early as April and linger into November. May and early October for pleasant weather with lighter crowds.

Final Thoughts: Which Island Is Better?
If you want luxury hotels, cliffside restaurants, rough coastline, and one of the most unique island views (the caldera), choose Santorini.
If you want soft-sand beaches, authentic Greek charm, and space to breathe, choose Ios.
They’re only a half-hour ferry apart—so you don’t actually need to decide on Ios vs Santorini, you can experience both!
